Welcome to the Center for the Study of the Big Thicket
The Lamar Univeristy Center for the Study of the Big Thicket supports research and education concerning the forested region of southeastern Texas and neighboring Louisiana. Our mission is to increase, protect and disseminate knowledge of the nature and history of the Big Thicket
and its people.
The center is part of Lamar's College of Arts and Sciences under the leadership of Dean Brenda Nichols. The director of the center is Judy Aronow.
The center seeks to fulfill its mission by
- Centralizing on the center's website, references to scholarly and artistic materials concerning the Big Thicket
- Supporting folkways and historical studies of the Big Thicket by students and scholars
- Supporting scientific studies of the Big Thicket by students and scholars
- Supporting symposia and speakers on the Big Thicket
Projects underway for this website include the activities for teachers you may see under Teacher Resources at left, and the addition of Big Thicket photographs by Larry Jene Fisher, sampled from the archives of the Gray Library.
